How Is Schizophrenia Diagnosed?

· 1 min read

Schizophrenia is diagnosed through a detailed clinical assessment. There is no single blood test or scan that can independently diagnose the condition.

What an assessment may include

  • Symptoms and how long they have lasted
  • Medical and psychiatric history
  • Family history
  • Medication history
  • Substance use
  • Changes in daily functioning
  • A mental-state assessment

Ruling out other causes

A clinician may consider other possible causes of psychotic symptoms, such as other medical conditions, medicines or substance use, before reaching a diagnosis.

Why diagnosis matters

An accurate assessment helps identify the most appropriate treatment and rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms.

Preparing for the appointment

  • Write down the symptoms and when they started
  • List current and past medicines
  • Note any family history of mental-health conditions
  • Consider bringing a family member or trusted person
