Schizophrenia Relapse: Warning Signs to Watch For

· 1 min read

Schizophrenia symptoms can return for some people. Noticing changes early gives the person and their treating team the best chance to respond quickly.

Possible warning signs

  • Changes in sleep
  • Increasing social withdrawal
  • Unusual suspiciousness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Reduced interest in normal activities
  • Difficulty managing daily responsibilities

Every person has their own pattern, so it helps to note what happened before earlier episodes.

A relapse-prevention plan

A personalised plan can include regular psychiatric appointments, taking medication as prescribed, monitoring early warning signs, a consistent sleep routine, stress management, avoiding harmful substance use and staying connected with supportive people.

What to do if signs appear

Contact the treating professional early rather than waiting. If someone may be at risk of harm, seek urgent help straight away.
